The colorful abstract paintings of Alfred McNamara, 1911-1994, definitely share a modern perspective with the Ashcan School of the early 20th century. This is evident from his early contemporary training at the Brooklyn Museum of Art in the 1930s, and later studying with Bernie Klonis at the New York Industrial School of Art. The exhibition displays his figural work and abstract social settings which earned him several awards in the United States and abroad. McNamara’s many exhibitions include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum, and near his home at the Staten Island Museum and Newhouse Gallery at Snug Harbor. The exhibition includes over 75 works obtained directly from the family.
